| We will be able to refer you to specialists working within the whole range of dentistry on the NHS. Referrals are sent to major teaching hospitals and special clinics set up by the health authorities. In most cases we will write directly to the specialist who will arrange an appointment for you to have a consultation. After that your treatment will be under the care of that specialist until he has completed your treatment plan. At that stage he will write back to your dentist passing you back into his or her care. You should however continue to attend your six month check ups with us. We can refer children up to 17 to a local orthodontic specialist on the NHS. In this case you will be given a referral slip, completed by your dentist and you will call the clinic to arrange your own appointment with the orthodontist. After that the procedure is as above. All normal dentistry will still be carried out at NHS Dentist as the orthodontist will only deal with the specialist treatment. We
can refer patients for general anaesthetic to local hospitals in extreme cases.
