How to not lose your teeth!

periodontal-disease

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a chronic infection caused by plaque bacteria building up around the teeth and beneath the gum line. In its early stages, it may cause bleeding gums, bad breath, swelling, or gum recession. As the condition progresses, it can lead to destruction of the bone and supporting tissues around the teeth, resulting in tooth mobility and eventually tooth loss.

Although periodontal disease cannot always be fully cured, it can usually be stabilised with the correct treatment and excellent oral hygiene. Daily plaque control at home is essential and includes effective tooth brushing twice daily, cleaning between the teeth, and attending regular professional maintenance visits.

If oral hygiene is not improved and the recommended periodontal treatment is not carried out, the disease is likely to continue progressing. This may result in further bone loss, gum recession, loose teeth, recurrent infections or abscesses, discomfort when eating, and eventual tooth loss. Advanced periodontal disease can also make future dental treatment more complex and costly.

Periodontal treatment available through the NHS can often be limited in scope and availability. For this reason, at NHS Dentist Fulham, Dr Afra Godarzi-Mofrad has independently developed a bespoke periodontal care programme designed to help patients stabilise periodontal disease in a more accessible and affordable way. This programme focuses on tailored treatment, preventive care, long-term maintenance, and patient education to support lasting periodontal health.
